SEO – How to Optimize Website with Your Keywords

Search Engine Optimisation 17/12/2012

Once you’re chosen keywords that you want to rank for, the next thing to do is to optimize your website with them. Optimizing the website will ensure that search engine crawlers will read our website content whenever someone searches our keywords and display them as one of the resources for people performing those searches. As a result, our website will get a boost from traffic.

SEO – How to Optimize Website with Your Keywords

In order to see what search engine crawlers read, simply open any website and click on view source on the browser menu. In the page source code, you’ll see several codes used on their websites, including headers, Meta tag, and Meta description tag among others. This is what search engines read to help them figure out what your site is about.

1. Title Tag

The first thing you want to focus is your Title Tag. Title tags are always at the top of each web pages squeezed between <HEAD> tags. The title tag looks something like this:

<title> Web Page Title</title>

Once you’ve found the title tag, you’ll want to insert your keyword phrase here to make your web page SEO-friendly. For example, if you’re targeting for a keyword phrase ‘youth tennis bats’, then you’d want to make sure that your title tag contain this exact keyword.

2. Meta Description Tag

The next tag you want to look at inside the <HEAD> tag is the ‘Meta Description Tag’. This tag tells the search engines what the site is about. The Meta Description tag looks like this:

<meta name=”Description” content=”This is the brief description of your page or website. ” />

This is the description you’ll see under the title of the site in search engine results. It’s imperative that you enter the description that is both human friendly and entices people to visit your site. In addition, make sure you also include your keyword phrase in the description.

3. Meta Keyword Tag

Our next tag that search engine usually look for is ‘Meta Keyword Tag’. This is the place where we want to cram all of our keywords, including main keywords, keyword phrases, and followed by additional relevant keywords to the site’s content. We cram keywords in Meta Keyword Tag so that search engines could read them. Here’s how the tag looks like:

<meta name=”Keywords” content=”keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3,” />

Drop all of those keywords you accumulated in the keyword list in the previous article. If you don’t know how to perform keyword search, read how to perform keyword search!

One word of advice! Don’t stuff your keywords just because you can. Instead, pick only handful of keywords, probably less than 8, that are really relevant to your site.

Once you’ve done that, you’re <HEAD> tag at the top of the page will have the title, description, and relevant keywords that search engines look for determine what your site is about. You <HEAD> tag will look something like this:

<head>

<title>Title goes here</title>

<meta name=”Description” content=”This is the brief description of your page or website. ” />

<meta name=”Keywords” content=”keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3,” />

</head>

4. Header1 or H1 Tag

After you’ve composed your <HEAD> tag, the next thing you’ll want to focus on is your H1 tag or often time referred as Header 1 tag. Search engines often consider Header tags the most important element on your web page, and therefore it makes sense to include your keyword phrase inside it. H1 tag is usually the most prominent bold letter at the begging of the page – like the news headlines.

Your header tag with your chosen keyword phrase will look something like this:

<h1>Header 1 tag with your keyword phrase</h1>

5. Header2 or H2 Tag

Like the Header 1 tag, the second most important element of your HTML document is the Header 2 or H2 tag. Header 2 tags are often used as sub-headlines for the content of the web page, emphasizing its significance and importance. You can either use your main keyword or another relevant keyword in the Header 2 tag a couple of times in your web document.

Header 2 tag looks like this:

<h2>Header 2 tag with main or secondary keyword phrase </h2>

For alternate keyword, you can use “youth tennis bats” keyword that you discovered through the Keyword Tracker tool.

Summary of SEO – How to Optimize Website with Your Keywords

In this article, we explained 5 simple steps to optimize your keyword by properly inserting your keywords in several tags. First we showed your how to properly insert keyword inside several Meta tags inside the <HEAD> tag at the top of your web page –title, description, and keyword.

Then we looked at how to insert both primary and secondary keywords inside the Header 1 and Header 1 tags as main headlines and sub-headings. SEO – Getting Backlinks to Your Site

Search Engine Marketing, Search Engine Optimisation 17/12/2012

Once you’ve figured out how to properly choose profitable keywords and optimize your website by inserting these keywords at several important places inside the web document, the next thing you want to focus your efforts on is to start building links to your website. More links you build back to your website, the better your website will rank on major search engines, especially in Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

SEO – Getting Backlinks to Your Site

While there are many ways to build links back to your website, in this article, however, I’ll show you few strategies you could use to leave your anchor links with your keyword on powerful website that usually get thousands of visits on a regular basis.

1. Bookmarking Your Site

Bookmarking is an important aspect of link building, and usually my favorite method to build back links to my site. To start with, you can visit SocialMarker that will help you add your website – content, images, and other documents – to more than a dozen different social bookmarking services.

To bookmark on these social sites, you’ll require creating an account for each of these social bookmarking services. Although this method might seem a little bit of tedious, once you’ve created account at each of these sites, you’re done. Meaning you don’t have to create another account again unless for other reasons – you want to bookmark few of your other websites under another account name.

2. Submit Your Site’s Details

Once you’ve set up your accounts and submitted your website on them, you’ll have a chance to enter the details of your website – your website title, anchor link, a brief description of your site, and finally your keywords.

For title, don’t forget to use your main keyword in it. Make it human readable and entice people to click through it by choosing enticing headlines. For links again, use the keyword you want to target for. For keyword, use both primary and secondary keywords you want.

Now submit your site as the SocialMarker service will guide you through setting up an account on various social bookmarking sites and suggest any changes or additions necessary.

3. Leave Comments on Blogs

Next, we’ll go back to Google and find few blogs that are relevant to our keywords by entering the keyword followed by the word “blog”. For example, if you’re targeting for “Youth tennis bats”, then you would search for “Youth tennis bats + blog”.

Once search engines list all relevant blogs on its front page, simply visit each blog and leave comments. Before you leave comments, use the search box or click on the ‘relevant posts’ to find the most relevant blog post for your keywords.

Once you’re ready to comment, you’ll see several fields on the comment section of the blog – name, email, and description fields. The name field always gets linked, so it would make sense to include your primary keyword here. Go on and enter website link in the URL, and email on the Email fields as they’re usually required fields.

While commenting, it’s imperative that you leave some valuable information on the blog. Please don’t spam as they’ll not only look bad, but you’ll end up getting your comments turned down anyway. So read the blog post before leaving a useful and interesting comment.

Continue repeating this method to every other website that you come across on the Google search lists.

4. Forum Posting

Another way to build links back to your website is to find forums relevant to your topic. Again just like blog commenting, go to Google and search using the primary keyword with a word “forum”. From the search result page, visit each forum that pops up and find a relevant thread to leave a reply. Don’t just leave reply under irrelevant topics.

Once you’ve found the thread, go ahead and leave a useful reply that will lead people to your website.

Many forums require you to register before you can leave a reply. During registration, most of them also allow you to enter your website link.

Consider these important points while leaving a reply on forums.

  1. Most forums let you create your own signature. Signature is a place where you enter your keyword as an anchor text and they basically appear at the bottom of your each forum post.
  2. Several other forums allow you to use hyperlinks on the thread itself. In your comment, use your primary keyword as hyperlink to create backlinks to your website. Remember, you’ll be using this as an anchor text, instead of a raw URL. Another credit for you keyword!

Continue posting replies and thread on other forums from the Google search results. Remember to always post helpful and interesting topics.

Summary of SEO – Getting Links to Your Site

After you’ve chosen profitable keywords and optimized your website, you’ll want to expend your effort on building links back to your site. You can submit your website on social bookmarking services by creating account on each of them, for once. Next, to build more backlinks to your site, you can visit blogs and forums and build anchor links with your primary key to make it more worthy. Finally, you’ll leave insightful and useful comments or threads relevant to the topics on these blogs and forums.

5 Important Things to Avoid While Leaving Comments on Blogs!

Search Engine Optimisation 17/12/2012

As discussed in earlier article on SEO, leaving comments on blogs is one of the ways to build backlinks to your blog or website. This will eventually help drive more traffic to your site, and as a result, increase the page rank of your site. More comments often mean more site traffic, and that’s why people leave as much comments as possible. However, while leaving comments, most people and especially beginners often make few mistakes or forget to follow certain rules imposed by the blog site owner and end up labeled as a ‘spammers’.

While people might not seem deliberate to spam these blog to backfire their own cause, going over these simple 5 blog commenting checklist will often pull you out of the red zone.

5 Important Things to Avoid While Leaving Comments on Blogs!

If you’ve noticed, blog comment box include several input fields to leave comment, email, a website URL, and finally blog comments for reciprocal purpose. First if you’re comment is approved, you’ll create a backlink for your site, meaning a free traffic for you. Second, you’ll also add value to the blog content – the very purpose the blog was built upon.

But sometimes you might get tempted to take a shortcut as you find few blogs approve blog comments without leaving anything in value. If you’re among them, I would like you to go over this article. And if you’re not among them, then I’d still want you to read the article to avoid these 5 deadly blog commenting practices.

1. Pissing off Blog Owner with Irrelevant Topics

To increase more website visits, you’ll require leaving comments that are relevant to blog topics as well as your niche. It doesn’t make sense to leave comments that are relevant to the blog post, but your website totally irrelevant to it. What will people do when they visit your website through the link? You bet, they’ll get confused as they were expecting something else, and it seems you have a totally different website.

So before leaving comment, go over the blog post once, and read the follow up comments, and try to increase the serial conversation as possible.

2. The Word Comments

To appear as being responsive, you might be tempted to leave one-word comments like ‘You’re welcome!’, ‘Thanks’, ‘Sure!’, but they don’t really help to foster communication or add value to blog posts. Remember, there are hundreds of people reading the same blog posts and if someone comes across your one-word comments, they’ll have a hard time figuring who you are and what you specialize on.

Always leave thoughtful comments, adding something to what’s already being discussed, and also try to entice people to visit your blog for interesting content on your blog as well.  Blog is a two-way online communication channel or community.

3. Avoid Spam Links on Comments

Now you know one-word comment isn’t helpful to build backlinks, attaching spam links as soon as you’ve written few words on comments isn’t a good act either. Many times, beginners as well as Internet Marketers (IM) often cram blogs with links to affiliate product site to earn quick money. Most importantly, they do it directly from other’s blog which is surely going to piss the blog owner and label you as a spammer they don’t want to deal with again.

4. Copy Pasting

Now you know that leaving relevant and useful comments is the way to go while leaving blog comments, the next thing you might be tempted to do would be to blatantly copy and paste content from other blogs. Just for the sake of pleasing someone, you might end up in a ‘spammer-zone’ as soon as the owner finds that you’ve plagiarized the content.

So avoid plagiarizing comments. If you’re pressed for time, hire someone to write fresh and appropriate content to create backlinks for your site.

Visit ‘Fiverr.com’ and you’ll have people wanting to post as many blog comments you want in $5.

5. Underestimating Other Comments

Before leaving comments on other blogs to build backlinks, I would highly recommend that you read over the post as well as other blog comments. Chances are they’ll help you write comments when you’re at your wits end. This will help to expand the topics discussed and serve as future topics for the posts and comments.

Do me a favor! Go and read every post and previous comments before leaving your comment.

Summary of 5 Important Things to Avoid While Leaving Comments on Blogs!

It’s no secret that ‘blog commenting’ is one of the ways to build quick backlinks and generate more traffic back to your site. But while leaving comments, many search-engine marketers often miss few important points that might piss off the blog owner, and as a result, end up being labeled as ‘spammers’.

We discussed 5 deadly mistakes you should avoid while commenting in this article. In the next article, I’ll uncover 5 more secrets to help you leave approve your comments on blogs.

SEO – How to Select the Right Keywords

Search Engine Optimisation 17/12/2012

If there’s one basic element you want to consider to increase traffic for your website, then you’ll need to remember two things – selecting proper keywords and optimizing your website with those keywords.

Selecting proper keyword for your website isn’t just about picking up a random keyword that fits the content. It’s ever more imperative for you to choose the right keyword for your website elements – content, images, and other things – to rank your website properly in search engines.

SEO – Selecting Profitable Keyword

Having said that, I would like to mention that there’s a bit of scientific equation while figuring out the right keyword for every website that you’ll ever create in your site. I know that you’re sighing in relief as I’ll reveal the exact method I use to rank my website higher in search engines.

1. How do Search Engine Work?

What would someone who’s interested to know about something do on the Internet? You bet. The first thing most people often do is hook up the internet, open up their browser, and usually visit Google and type in their keywords. Then Google – the world’s largest and popular search engine – lists the top ten results relevant to the keyword you type.

The top ten sites on the front page of the Google often get the most traffic. The top 3 sites get’s almost 98% of the total traffic than others, while other sites get 40 to 50 percent of the traffic. Similarly, sites that are listed on the second, third, or even fourth pages are also likely to get substantial amount of traffic from these search engines. But beyond these pages, websites usually get lesser amount of traffic.

2. Your Number One SEO Priority

Your number one goal should be to target these first pages as websites usually get more traffic from them and they’re completely free or organic. Organic traffic is also known as free traffic as you won’t be paying any fee for people coming to your website. In-organic or paid traffic means that you pay a small amount of fee whenever anyone visit your site. The small ads in text block and link that you see at the right and left column of Google are the example of paid traffic and are the quickest way to get more traffic to your site.

So the best thing for you to do is to obviously put your site at the beginning of Google as you’ll get more benefit from these searches.

3.  Keyword Competition

There are several keywords or keyword phrases in your niche that are always more competitive than the others. For example, Broad keywords are usually competitive and as a result, are usually harder to rank for in the search engines results.

That’s why, you must be careful to choose proper keywords that will help you rank high and drive more traffic to your website.

4. How to Determine Your Keywords?

While determining what your keyword would be, you must be able to put yourself on the shoe of others. For example, you’ll need to think like your buyer or any other person who might be seeking for information that you have to offer. In other words, you’ll have to do a brainstorming to figure out what keywords they might use to look for services, products, or other information.

5. Keyword Tools

Once you’re made a list of keywords that your potential clients type for, you can then dig deeper and see how many searches per day all those keywords in the list are getting. To find searches per day, you can use several online free keyword search tools, including WordTracker, Google Keyword Tool, and Market Samurai.

WordTracker offers a 7 day trial period, while Google Keyword Tool is absolutely free. Both sufficient to get you started if you don’t want to pay right out the bat. Market Samurai is a paid service but offers a lot of in-depth information about the number of searches your keywords gets.

6. Broad Keyword Search

In these tools, you can then enter your keywords from the list and then find out how many searches per day each keyword gets. As a rule, keywords that get more than 100 searches per day are profitable. But keyword that usually get 10 to 20 searches per day means that they might not get a lot of traffic, and hence not profitable for you.

For example, let’s suppose that you sell tennis bats … online. Let’s say you want to figure out how many searches per day two keywords phrases get, the first ‘aluminum tennis bats’, and the other ‘tennis bats’.

Enter each of these two keyword in the keyword tool I suggested earlier – WordTracker, Google Keyword Tool, or Market Samurai. Once you’ve entered the first keyword – the ‘aluminum tennis bats’ – you’ll find that the results weren’t that impressive. While writing this article, the keyword didn’t get too many searches per day, less than 30, meaning this isn’t the keyword you want to target to get more traffic.

But on the other hand if you enter the ‘tennis bats’, you’ll see that it gets more than 700 searches per day. Likewise, down the list, you’ll find other similar keyword phrases that these tool displays. This time I’ll enter the keyword ‘youth tennis bats’ and it gets more than 250 searches per day. Now these are good keyword phrase that you want to target for.

7. How difficult is it to Rank?

After you’ve chosen profitable keywords that you want to rank for, the next thing you want to do is go back to Google and search again to find out how hard those chosen keywords might be to rank for at the first page of Google.

For that, enter the keyword phrase into Google and look at the search results. If all the sites listed in the front page are well-established like Wikipedia, CNN, and others, then it might be little harder to rank at the top as your competitor seem solid, well-built, and strong.

However, if you find several pages on the front page of Google as social media sites, blogs, and online shopping sites, then you have a good chance of grabbing that top rank.

8. Bonus: Phrase Keyword Search

You can take one more step by searching your keyword around quotes. For example, type “youth tennis bats”, with the double quotation marks, in Google and look at the search results. In this case, the results shows this particular phrase search returns more than 34 thousand search and almost all social media sites are getting the ranking. This is good news and it confirms that you can rank for this keyword easily in the first page of Google.

Summary of SEO – How to Select Profitable Keywords

In SEO, your number one goals must be to rank on the first few pages of search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. For that, you’ll require to choose a proper key that gets both huge amounts of searches per day and easy to rank for as well. In this article, we discussed few steps on how you could select proper keywords using free Keyword tool to find keyword to figure out profitable keywords and determine how easy it is to rank for.

Monitoring website uptime and downtime

Website Maintenance Basics 15/09/2012

It is absolutely important that your website is up and running all the time. In an ideal world, it is best if the site is live all the time, everytime. However, this may not always be possible as explained on a separate article: causes of server downtime. For this reason, it is essential that website’s uptime is monitored regularly.

How to monitoring website uptime?

Monitoring your website uptime rate manually is virtually impossile. This task can be automated using tools that can visit a website via HTTP and can ping the site in time intervals of about 5 minutes to an hourly check. These also submit reports via email or through the service’s page. There are plenty of online services that do the check without the need to install any software or have too much technical know-how–just sign up using email.

Some uptime monitoring tools you can use:

  1. UptimeRobot.com — checks websites every 5 minutes and can add 50 sites all for free and get notifications through social media like Twitter.
  2. Monitor.us — they list themselves as an “entry-level monitoring service” and they boast a quick signup (3 minutes) without installing any software; just sign up.
  3. Pingdom.com — other services do offer SMS alerts but Pingdom is a paid service (their free services aren’t much compared to others) that gives out a report including the reason of website failure/downtime.
  4. Site24x7.com — Although they have a free plan, they also have great paid services that can check sites in intervals of 1 minute. Their reports are aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and boasts companies where logos are posted on their sites like HP and Sony.

How to deploy them?
First, owners have to choose to go free or to go paid or both. Free services are available on most of the sites listed below and these can monitor multiple sites and still give out reports via email. The owner can also opt to go for their paid versions giving them in return more features. Going to their website and signing up are the initial steps in setting up a monitoring system.

There are plenty of other services that can track website uptime and the wisest tip is to have a lot of them keeping tabs on the sites provided there’s someone who can handle all the influx of reports coming in all about uptime.

Benefits of monitoring downtime

Watching out for downtimes can mean the difference between a profit and a loss whether it’s viewership or financial. By having watchful eyes on a site’s online presence, one can ensure he/she can make better decisions on web hosts, site maintenance, and on costs.

What is server downtime and its causes?

Website Maintenance Basics 15/09/2012

Server downtime is the time when the server hosting your website is not in service resulting in your website being inaccessible to online visotrs.

Causes of Downtime

The person providing internet service isn’t perfect and so is the internet itself. Websites, on rare occasions, can go out of service for a variety of reasons as listed below:

Distributed Denial-of-Service Attacks (DDOS)
Bigger online companies and banks frequently get attacked through DDOS. Performing quite an attack may require multiple computers on the side of the attacker and can get quite complex but to simplify, think of it as thousands of computers constantly accessing the site, using its bandwidth which was supposedly made accessible for genuine visitors and these attacks will eventually render sites unavailable to anybody.

Domain Name Server (DNS) Issues
This is different from IP addresses but is related. When visiting sites like Google.com, that actually has its own IP address but web surfers can’t see it because they typed in Google.com and not its numerical address. Sometimes, when a domain is new, the “pipes” of the internet has to be rerouted to the new domain and may take a while to propagate but this usually lasts for about a day or two. Should it last for a week or so, that’s a sign to contact the domain name provider.

Firewall
This actually sounds quite trivial but sometimes having the firewall turned on (which is a good security move) can block access to sites selectively and may confuse the web surfer on what’s going on. Ensure that the firewall on both ends (visitor and server) have properly configured their respective firewalls.

Shared Hosting
Do not confuse this with the newer “Cloud Shared Hosting”. Shared hosting is when, for example, site A occupies the same “room” as with other websites. When an insane number of visitors come for the other sites and not site A, the other sites in the same room will experience a slower connecting speed or worse, have all the sites go down. Not only is that a problem but if one site gets infected with malware, it could affect the rest (like the flu).

There are other possible reasons for downtimes and that could include undersea cables cut or just poor web hosting maintenance but what’s important is to deploy the monitoring tools mentioned earlier which can give website owners a daily, weekly, and monthly report on website uptime.

What is server uptime?

Website Maintenance Basics 15/09/2012

An operational definition of server uptime is the measure of how long a website is live and accessible on the internet. Keeping websites live and accessible to all visitors 27/7/365 is a key factor for companies in order to maintain their online presence to all who visit their sites each day. Plus, think of the ignominy, the shame of having a website, yet, the main site is unavailable to the general online community.

To achieve good uptimes, they spend resources on keeping their services online by keeping backup servers should anything go wrong for any user around the world but for the rest who maintain their own websites that isn’t as big as Google as of now may not have the access to such resources. Thus, it would be in the website owners’ best interest to find a webhost that provides close to 100%, if not 99% uptime and uptime can be determined by employing monitoring tools that do the job.

Since many do not own and run their own servers, website owners must find a reliable host that keeps their sites up and running better than the rest. However, these webhosts do tend to bend the truth and misuse the term 99.99% uptime, and how they can offer it to their customers. They may mean a 99.99% uptime for a duration of a week, a month, or worse a day yet their customers have no idea on this. The best way to know for sure is to deploy some means to monitor the website uptime and downtime without having to do it personally and manually every second of every day in front of the computer screen.

Having 100% uptime is close to impossible but having a long uptime can also mean the site doesn’t experience any form of backing up or update either in the layout, software, or hardware. Downtimes are perfectly normal for a site undergoing maintenance and the best act a website owner can do is to keep vital services online while doing maintenance on the rest.

Web Analytics – what is it and what does it do?

Website Analytics 03/09/2012

Wouldn’t it be great to receive information on how to improve one’s websites? Such data can be gathered from users who visit the site through survey but not many of them would answer it. Now, there exists something called web analytics and it’s worth looking at for any website owner.

What is Web Analytics

When data is collected from website visitors on what browser they are on and their location, and when these are analyzed and published in a report, this is called web analytics. True, website plug-ins that track visitors and visitor counters may have been around since the internet was born but these have grown to gather more than that. By gathering where the visitors are coming from (geolocation), what browsers they’re using, and from what sites they are coming from, one can measure how well the site relates to visitors and if a new marketing strategy to bring in new unique visitors is created, web analytics will offer data and results showing whether or not it was an effective strategy.

Functions and Importance of Using Analytics

As stated earlier, the basic is that it gathers information about the website visitor collecting his/her:

  • IP address – This is the address all online surfers have when establishing their presence on the internet. Think of it as a house address but in place of street, city, and country names are numbers.
  • Browser details – This is the browser the visitor used in surfing the website and web pages.
  • Operating system – One would know this by checking the report and see the operating system used by the visitor whether it’s Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS X, Android 2.3 or 4.0.
  • Time of visit – At what times does the web site receive the most amount of traffic? This becomes quite useful when dealing with bandwidth issues and delivering of advertisements.
  • Length of visit – How long does a visitor stay on the site? Is it an hour? If so, could this imply that he is staying there because he’s reading or because he’s away from the computer? Regardless, there are numerous uses where a majority of users will tell one on how long they stay on different pages on the web site. This allows the owners to be able to put various ads once he knows how long, on average, users stay on the site.
  • Time of leaving – At what time have they had enough? If they stay too short of a time, is it because of too much ads or too little content?
  • Online presence (if he/she is still on the site) – Maybe owners would like to conduct surveys and would target those that are currently on the site. A small chat could be opened up between the support team and the website visitor.
  • Frequency of reloading site’s pages –  Are some pages frequently reloaded/refreshed because the viewers are waiting for newer content or they’re using it as a reference?
  • Pages visited – Some pages are worth more than the others are relative to many visitors. Owners can take advantage of this data by possibly generating similar content but with deeper context to entice returning visitors to stay and visit the site even more often.
  • Previously visited websites/results from search engine – Sites today are optimized for search engines and as a result, SEO was born–short for search engine optimization. Web analytics delivers the report on what terms were used by visitors to arrive at the site using search engines like Google and Yahoo.
  • Uniqueness of visitor – Not all visitors are new people visiting the site. Maybe they are recurring visitors as the owner could tell by their IP addresses and while there is no real method to determining the ‘uniqueness’ of a visitor, this is still a useful tool to determine how many users the site receives daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.

How to find and install

There are several ways to install web analytics but one must know how they can be found. These can be a built-in feature of the site, an off-site resource, or software (proprietary or otherwise) manually installed. Built-in features exist in the cpanel contain web analytics that gather ip addresses, locations, browsers, and operating systems the visitors have used since the site was published. Off-site resources still do the same thing but one must place their code on one’s own website. Note that installing such off-site resources that uses JavaScript may pose a security risk in which hackers can exploit such problems. For software downloaded and installed coming from a reputable company shouldn’t be a problem and instructions probably are included.

Note that all these can be used to improve visitor experience and can help profits for the business but these data must be treated with the utmost confidentiality especially in keeping user cookies. Avoid deploying those “third-party” cookies that track the visitor after he has spent time on the site as this can present even more legal issues.

Tips for faster web page load time

Website Maintenance Basics 02/09/2012

Website owners want to put their message out there and can come in the form of audio, video, and image but these can weigh down heavily on loading times for the end-users who have to buffer the content placed on the webpage and not all users have a relatively fast internet connection. Owners must then find the balance between presentation and content keeping the user on the site and still getting that full website experience.

The first section of this page involves optimizing content on the site and the second contains general tips for improving the load time of websites.

Optimization involves not only editing the content but also how it loads onto a webpage but editing the content itself may be time-consuming. Below are tips on how to deal with wanting to put up all that content yet maintaining a fast load time.

Bigger file size = Slow loading times

Images
When taking a photo on a digital camera, novice website content makers tend to put the image immediately on the page or article. What they’ve forgotten is the file size of that “raw” photo is quite large (1mb to 20mb) because its image resolution is quite big (greater than 800×600) and the images themselves may not fit the end-users monitors. Images for web viewing don’t have to be quite large and can be restricted to as big as 800×600 in resolution using the JPEG format. Using the JPEG format (80%-90% quality) will greatly lower the file size of images and retain that quality where regular users won’t be able to spot the difference than the original one. Software that can trim image resolution sizes that are free for download includes GIMP, Picasa, and the ever-quick Irfanview. Also, it would be best to also provide a link to the original image file using a text hyperlink for other users who desire such quality. For smaller images though, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Animated Images
For animated pictures and small logos with not much color in them, it would be wise to GIF as it can handle animation and does well with flat colors. In the past when processing speed was still maturing, choosing between the file formats of JPEG and GIF was quite important but now that processing speed has improved by a great factor along with better internet speeds, it would pose a minute difference today.

Videos
Everyone lives in the era where high-definition (HD) videos exist including the cameras that take such high resolution videos. The site developers may want to put an image on the site but blasting full HD videos can hurt the end-users limited bandwidth and can strain their internet speeds. Lower resolutions of HD videos (320p and 480p) should provide the same experience than giving out full HD quality immediately. Of course, similar to what’s suggested on images, having those options to view the original files will make other users happier.

Sound
Placing sound clips on sites isn’t a practice that has disappeared. Having such clips may be more important than putting videos depending on the content of the site. Bit rates play a bigger factor as it affects the file sizes. By no means does this inquiry into sound clips try to tackle all the technical details like acoustic fidelity but what’s important for now is to adjust the bit rate and for different types of sound clips, the bit rate will differ. For song samples, podcasts, and others, using a bit rate of 96 kbps instead of the common 128 kbps would significantly lower the file size yet retain the quality similar to how re-saving images to JPEG would save the image quality although to the trained ear (especially audiophiles), this would be detectable. But as majority of viewers aren’t, this won’t pose a large obstacle.

Text
Well, one can’t really say having too much text is a bad thing on a webpage but if it’s purely text, it might be too dull for the reader. Optimizing text, though, isn’t a problem.

Moderate overall web page file size

Moderation is the key. Having too little or too much content on one page will bore or overwhelm the viewer. But when does a page have too much or too little content? Below are tips on when to utilize images, videos, sound clips, and text and how much should be present on one web page:

Limit the number of images on each page
If it’s a photo-blogging site, by all means, have a lot of photos there but viewers would want to have an overall feel to all the photos present on the site thus having thumbnails would please the viewers’ eyes. But for bigger resolution images, limit it to only one per page especially when the resolution goes much higher than the optimized one.

For regular sites, having multiple smaller images would do. There are no “real” rules to how many images must be on a single page but something manageable to the eyes would do. If the sidebars have too many unnecessary and nonfunctional images, it’s best to remove them and replace them with text or just leave the space blank. Sometimes simplicity is beauty. Apple is a good example.

Limit the number of videos on each page
Showing one video per page is best when showing videos similar to the YouTube experience which should create a familiar environment for the viewers. Putting too many videos on one page would overwhelm them as it’s like watching multiple TV shows from multiple screens all at the same time. Ensure that videos do not automatically load once the user goes to the page. Let the user click on the play button themselves as it can be annoying to have them play automatically possibly shocking the viewers

Sound
This isn’t a common thing to do unless it’s a podcasting site or a sound effects library. Regardless, one can put multiple sound clips on one page provided none of them auto-plays although limiting it to 10 clips would be better manageable. The users themselves must do the playing. Also, having background music upon loading the page is a big no-no in the modern times.

Are you Dressed to Impress?

If the website owner is building his/her portfolio, it would be in his/her best interest to put everything at its best quality as users who do visit the site will understand that they’re visiting a portfolio site and will have the patient for the content to load.

Having a page loading time of less than 3 seconds should keep visitors on the web site and not all content has to be there especially for video but what’s important is for the basic template/layout to be immediately visible thus saying presentation is crucial but following these tips should improve them even more and remember, moderation is still the key.

Reasons to backup Sites

Website Backup 31/08/2012

Searching for things on the internet is quick & easy giving that illusion of having a steady and constant flow of information ad infinitum. What is mostly forgotten is at times the internet does go down–well, technically, many websites do go out of service and can’t be found on the internet. When these things happen, it usually is because of one thing–maintenance. And what is done during maintenance? Back-up.

When police officers call for back-up, they usually mean having an extra person to go with them. But this isn’t exactly the back-up for websites. A site back-up is like a second copy of an original document should that primary record “disappear”. Thus, a website backup is a second copy of a website only that it usually isn’t stored in another website but on some local hard drive. Not only are the content and everything else seen on the pages are backed up but also possible users that have registered on the website. The databases themselves contain a lot of sensitive information of other users who may not be working for the site but has registered because of the services the site offers and if this is hacked or deleted by accident and no back-up exists, users will flock somewhere else losing visitors and regular viewers. Back-ups can be done manually or automatically by software and may not be up-to-date as the current up-and- running site.

Is this back-up necessary when maintaining a website? Absolutely! Listed below are some reasons why having backups and even multiple backup give website owners a much more powerful grasp and control over their websites:

#1 Reason: Security
This is perhaps the universal cause of why backing up data found the website is a must. Each day as new technology updates itself and creates even newer tech, fresh malicious computer programs (i.e. viruses, trojans, worms) also are created by hackers and crackers all over the world. WordPress hacks are quite common for novice bloggers who install themes downloaded from dubious online sites as the malicious hackers have injected code into those themes allowing them to take over the site. Content and database information could be compromised and having to redo the entire layout can be tedious. That’s where backup comes in. Having that second copy allows the owner to re-upload what should be seen on the site after removing all the malicious codes.

Passive backups
Web developers who like to create content, layouts, and graphics locally on the computer without utilizing the internet are actually creating a backup of what is to be uploaded on the real website through manual upload or FTP. Most especially content, these can be viewed completely offline. A1so, if something goes wrong on the servers because of hacks or accidental deletion of files, a copy does exist on the webmaster’s computer. On the other hand, it can get difficult trying to add new and update existing content when one is the move from one place to another as original copies are stored on the computer where the webmaster was originally working. Nonetheless, this backup is a backup.

“Valuable” information
Some content owners may have on their sites are either created by their team or on their own. Either way, the produced content cannot be re-written especially when the author has left. Valuable information include these along with those that visitors frequent as it may have become their reference and having the significance of having these published and accessible is a must. Thus, having a backup of such information almost guarantees those material will never be lost than having none at all.

Something to take note of when performing backups: Included below are such limitations and how to overcome them:

Backups not up-to-date
It would waste a lot of resources to back up information on a website every single moment in time but one way to lessen that load is to create a schedule in which downtimes are set for backing up data. These may not have to be that often depending on how frequent new content is uploaded on the site. Also, via FTP, one can perform backups even without putting the website offline for a while by simply transferring the files from the main servers to one’s computer.

Limited knowledge to backup
This is one factor many people do not create backups as an option in content management systems do not intuitively appear for the users. Workarounds include emailing copies to oneself about content especially articles and commentaries. FTP is quite an ‘old’ technology and FTP software allows the users to simply click and drag files and folders from the server to the computer and vice-versa.

How often should one perform a backup? That’s also another problem for the site master and can easily be answered through this question: How often is new content coming into the site? Is it daily, weekly or monthly? The more regular content comes in, the more frequent backups should be.

Large file sizes require a considerable time
As the amount of content and registered users increase in a website over time, the sizes of files tend to also increase and if the owner doesn’t have that much bandwidth and a fast connection, it would take so much time and resources. One way to overcome this is to back up files that have been recently updated as not all files are updated and require backing up if it has been backed up already. Backing up only content also can save time.

The importance of backing up one’s files far exceeds its limitations. Losing files can be the major cause of a website and a company’s downfall. Don’t let that happen! Remember to always back-up!

How to backup a website

Website Backup 31/08/2012

Website owners’ responsibilities include protecting and backing up the content and databases on their sites and this can be done using several methods. There are a few traditional and relatively inefficient but effective methods of doing it but with the introduction of better and more improved operating systems, newer software can do the job with a few clicks.

The first thing listed below are some pre-requisite software utilized for backing up and compressing the files as to keep things organized and not just have files scattered around the user’s desktop and next are the places where the user can put all the backups. This is more of a manual method of performing a backup.

What follows after is a list of software that does the backup automatically after inputting the right settings on it.

Pre-requisites:

First, the user must download some of the software needed to perform a backup.

• FTP (File transfer protocol)
The user may already have this software installed on the computer to upload files to the website. What is done for updating is uploading and what is needed is downloading and FTP can do that too. The user must be able to download all content he/she needs for the backup. This can be done using the same FTP software (i.e. FileZilla) or if there’s none, the interface when the user can logs into the website URL as the administrator will also work.

Second, the user needs something to compress all the files together which act as a super-folder that holds other folders and files of information and also acts as a compressor that lessens the file sizes of the files. After installing any of the software below, select all the files that should be backed up, right click, and an “Add to Archive” option will appear. Click it and you may be able to set the file extensions to .zip, .rar, or .7z. All the selected files will now be placed into one super-file. Ensure that the file names include the dates of when the backup was performed as a reference for future use (ex. backup 05-23-11.zip).

• WinZip & Winrar
These are two of the most popular compression software available today. WinZip comes free on any Windows operating system while Winrar is more for compatibility as some files cannot be read using WinZip. Winrar is available online as a shareware program. It works for 40 days and as written on their terms of use, it must be removed after that. A better alternative follows.

• 7z
Yes, its software name is really just 7z. This is freeware available online and can read zip, rar, and any other compressed format out there. Users can’t go wrong having this installed on their computers for any reasons aside from backing up.

Places to back up:

• Email
The good thing about living in the present and what to look forward for in the future is having “free” web space and that includes emails. Many email providers like Gmail provide almost 10 gigabytes of space that users can use, and it’s free. Some users might prefer working with their email client as they have gotten used to writing emails than using some new and unfamiliar software.

To perform a backup via email, the user must…
1. download all the content found on the website
2. compress it (using WinZip or Winrar),
3. rename the file including its backup date (this is quite important),
4. Email it to a specified address be it their own, a developer, or an engineer hired to keep all the backups.

It is good to note down step 3 as it is a very simple step but important for the user and any other administrator for determining which is the latest backup file in the archives.

• Cloud storage
In the age of “free” online storage, the user can take advantage of such services by uploading backups. All the user has to do is sign up to the service. Some examples are Skydrive (Microsoft), Dropbox, and Sugarsync. There are a lot of free storage services so choose whichever is convenient, safe, and comfortable to use.

• External hard drives/thumb drives
It isn’t an uncommon site to see people carrying around with them their own flash thumb drives and even external hard drives. These usually contain documents, images, songs, and maybe some home movies that are important for them. Almost anyone in this generation has access to such technology and storage space isn’t much of a problem. A single thumb drive has a whopping 64 gigabytes worth of space and that is common. For external hard drives, it can go as much as 2 terabytes (close to 2,000 gigabytes). And backing up websites on these media is now an option as they don’t cost quite as much as they used to.

Some software, however, do allow the user to perform a simple click-and-backup action. There are quite a number of free and paid software and one can view this by quick search on Wikipedia (see List of Backup Software). But below are suggested software to use for backing up that doesn’t cost the user much and some pre-installed backup features that the user can find depending on what’s installed.

Software

• Fbackup
Although there’s no software that suits everyone’s needs, there has to be one that will suit a sample of the population that maintains a usable and intuitive interface retaining its functionalities and while there are quite a number of them out there, Fbackup’s interface should appeal to many users especially those on Windows machines (versions for 32-bit and 64-bit are available).

• Backup maker
“Creating data-backups has never been this easy” is the slogan one finds when visiting their site. All the user has to do is to set up a schedule on when a backup should be performed on the computer and the software does the rest. It is quite feature-rich allowing the user to even backup on an attached flash drive or to another website via FTP. They offer a free version (Windows only, 32-bit) provided it is personally used and not for a corporation.

Pre-installed backup features

Backup through cPanel
Users usually have cPanel available to them when logging into the domain and a feature of “Back up” can be found in the Files submenu. All the user has to do is click on backup and cPanel creates the backup file which will be available for download after it has created it and by then, the user can download the back-up file which can be re-uploaded later in case of website failure.

Backup through WordPress
Hacks on blogs and sites using WordPress is becoming a common scene because of misinformed users that installing themes is a safe thing to do when in reality, hackers insert malicious code allowing them access to the users’ sites where they could change information stored on the sites. WordPress has long had its backup feature and plug-ins that auto-uploads the files to cloud storage services like DropBox are even available to use.

Although there’s no true easy method of performing a backup, doing any of these steps ensure content is safe and secure even when the storm comes and can be re-uploaded without much of a hitch. What the user has to figure out now is to determine his/her preference in backing up information in an efficient, secure, and reliable way.

(Note: “Free” is still free provided the user stays within the accepted limits of the terms and conditions of the service. Thus, if the user uploads any infringing content on his/her email or anywhere online, he/she may be rebuked for it.)

Website should be designed keeping in view such a disastrous situation in mind. Preparing websites to handle traffic spikes starts from the beginning of the design. It is a bad idea to handle such a situation only when it occurs. There are number of ways to keep the problem under control.

  • Using traffic spike simulator – Traffic spike simulator such as Google Analytics or Loadstorm can be used to simulate increased traffic activity and functionality of the website. This load testing measures can help to identify the potential problem areas. Addressing problem becomes efficient once you can identify the weakest part of the site and take appropriate measure.
  • Using lightweight download – If the site provide downloadable information, the downloaded file should be as small as possible by using lightweight file formats. Simple text file are lightweight hence downloads faster. Unless otherwise necessary having text files for download is a good option. Sometimes it is required to have downloaded text information to be read only. In that case PDF may be an option but keep in mind that textual PDFs are more lightweight than that of PDF’s which contains images. While providing tabular information CSV or XML file format are more lightweight and should be considered rather than using other heavy weight tabular sheet such as excel.
  • Using third party services – CDN or Content Distribution Network servers are distributed in various part of the world. Their purpose is to serve end-users with maximum availability and performance. Website can put up their static content in such server and take off load from your server. Performance gets boost up when CDN server offers content of your site from the server closest to the location of the surfer. As a result your site gets more time to serve dynamic content which is very crucial under traffic spikes.
  • Fine tune your website – Design simple and lightweight web pages, especially, home page because home page gets most hit by the visitors. If a site needs to be heavy, maintaining a lightweight version of the same can be advantageous during the time of need. For instance mobile versions of websites are generally lightweight. This can be made available to desktop PC user as soon as the crisis hit upon.
  • Rid or reduce Web pages decorated with big image file sizes as well as Flash. It can be aesthetically pleasing but requires more bandwidth. Even in normal circumstances these pages load slower in the browser than that of the pages created using simple HTML. This situation worsens and the loading often get sluggish under bandwidth crisis due to traffic spikes.
  • Optimize your server – Mounting all the services in to a single server is one of the vital reasons of sluggish performance. Small Web Host companies tends to generally combine file/content and database into one server as a means to reduce their costs. Thus when serving http request under heavy load can bring down the database server. When workload is distributed among several computers performance of your site can improve dramatically.

Conclusion
There is no single measure to increase performance of a website especially under traffic spikes. Some other intricacies such as bandwidth and resource usage limits also need to be considered to optimize the performance of the site under heavy traffic. Though performance comes with a cost yet a careful planning and adequate measures can bring it to a minimum level.

One just cannot have a new website or blog set up without performing search engine submission, where you submit the website to a number of search engines so that it may show up when people search for relevant phrases on the web. You do not have to pay money to giant search engines like Yahoo and Google to have your website listed there. This article is intended to teach you the ropes of search engine submission, even if it is the first website you have ever made.

List of Popular search engines
The three most regarded sites for conducting internet searches are: Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Ask.com is also a contender. It is important to take note that as of 2012, following a deal with Bing, yahoo displays Bing search engine results. There are a number of search engines that have a huge database, but not as popular as the big ones like Web Crawler, HotBot, Dogpile and AltaVista. Most of the information maintained by these search engines is generated from the data combined through Google, Yahoo, and Bing. At the big three, submitting your site is easy peasy, but the same cannot be said about Ask.com, where the job gets a little bit complicated. Ask.com requires knowledge of sitemaps, while the other three do not, as they simply take the URL of your main page, and search the site all the way in.

Submitting Your Website to Google
Google does not charge you with any fees, and there is no such thing as a membership required for this search engine submission. This is where the Meta Description tags come into play, in addition to some other information regarding the tools, which may be available to a visitor.
Visit google.com/addurl You only need to submit the homepage, and the submission will be complete, once you click on “Add URL”.

Submitting Your Website to Yahoo
Just like Google, adding your website to Yahoo is easy peasy. Yahoo does not require you to add a description of the website, which would have made it easy for search engine optimization.
Visit search.yahoo.com/info/submit
After arriving on the webpage, click on “Submit your site for free”, followed by selecting “submit a website or webpage.”

You can click on “Submit URL” once you have typed the URL of your homepage in the submission box. Yahoo provides a free website review service, but an inclusion into Yahoo! Directory is not free.

Submitting Your Website to Bing
Visit bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url. There will be a box provided in which you have to type the URL of your homepage. Afterwards, click on “Submit URL”. The process is free of cost. Now the search engine submission to the big three is complete. Before submitting your website on to Ask.com, you had better gain some insights into what is a Sitemap.

Importance of Sitemap!
A sitemap points out the structure of the website, providing information about various links, and the way that website is panned out. One may find a sitemap on a number of websites, where it is located on their homepage in the form of a link. A number of webmasters do not feel that a sitemap has any importance associated with it, but in reality the presence of a sitemap is important for just every website, as it is a part of search engine submission. The sitemap has to be placed on the website’s homepage. The PageRank is highest for the homepage, which sends a signal out that if you place it on the homepage, the likelihood of your pages being indexed is quite high. To have a successful website, SEO techniques are to be executed from every corner. Not only is the indexing made faster, but also it becomes easier for users to navigate through the website, so it is a win-win situation.

The role of the sitemap is opposite to Robots Meta Tags, as the sitemap tells the search engine where to go, and makes it easier for you website to be indexed, while the Robots Meta Tags are used to let the search engine know which pages to exclude from indexing. Sitemap does have a role to play when it comes to the proof of you as running an organization, or having some sort of relevance. A sitemap emphasizes the theme of your website too.

Search Engine Submission Services
Search engine submission experts are there to boost up the ranking of your website, so that it appears in Google’s top 10 for that particular keyword. The service will not only submit the website to thousands of search engines, but also optimize it so the search engine spider picks it up. There may be different packages offered by the search engine submission service

There can be many questions like whether it is now necessary for the back links to be placed. There are various updates of search engines but regardless of updates there are always common SEO problems that need to be dealt with by every webmaster. The few common errors that may arise are given below:

Improper Keyword Research

The search engines work on the usage of the keywords. The search engines will find a specific site if the query is similar to the keyword in the site then it will display that page in the search results. Most recent practise is focusing on long tail keywords or phrases as a single keyword or shorter keywords tend to be dominated by authority sites. However, it is essential to do a research on the keywords so that you attract a large number of people to your site, failing to conduct a keyword search will result in limiting the number of users to your website. What is the point of using keywords that only 2 people will look for? More importantly, you must be able to analyze your chance of ranking on those keywords. It is no good if your website/web page is displayed on page 500 of a search engine result.

Keyword stuffing

There should be a balance of the use of keywords in your webpage or blog. If you use the main keyword in each and every sentence of your site then the search engine will not be able to pick up the site, thus limiting the traffic to your site. The over usage of the words in the site may lead to the spamming which may cause the search engine in placing the site in spam and it won’t be good to you at all. The right and useful percentage is to use the keywords from 3 percent to the 8 percent in the site. The attention to the keywords will bore the visitors on your site. It is also a big misunderstanding that capitalizing the keyword phrases will result in better in the search engine results.

Low value links

The links are an important part of SEO there are usually two problems faced by the webmaster which either they place very few links in the site or they place too many links in the page. The potential visibility to the visitors and customers increase significantly when you link your webpage to other sites. It is a good idea because the more you link to other sites larger there is an opportunity for your website to be viewed by many potential customers. There should be moderation while linking to other sites since if you link too much then you may wind up having another SEO problem.

Links should only be placed after checking the credibility of the site you are linking, do not link with the sites that are spammed since you may also be affected by it. The new update by Google the Google Penguin will search out such sites that are spammed. Therefore it should be verified that you get links from the credible website as it affects the SEO of your site.

Balance between Overall Content: Text and Graphics/MultiMedia

The search engines encounter difficulties while reading the text on the site if such animations or these extra elements are and quite often they can skip the page. This causes the web traffic to become very limited to your site. The items to improve the appearance of the site could cost you low visibility in the search results and can cost you to lose the potential customers.

Failure to update the site

The content should be regularly updated so the website remains with new information and remain attractive to the visitors to visit it. Adding the fresh and updated contents to your page will result in the search engines to rank your page higher. New keywords can also give good results in increasing the rankings in search results.

Focus on your Target Visitors and not too much on Search Engine Optimization
It is a well known fact that many different tactics and techniques that can be used to achieve higher rankings in search engine results. These techniques may include Meta keywords, descriptions, robot tags, title tags, body texts, h1 text etc. but this technique alone are not sufficient to attract higher ratings.

It is very important to write quality content which is both informative and fun to read, this will automatically attract the readers to your website, webpage or your blog. When there is a quantity of traffic to the site the search engines like Yahoo, Google, and Bing e.t.c will automatically rate is higher in their search engine results.

Conclusion:
The search engine optimization mistakes hihglighted above should be avoided to improve your website’s search engine ranking thereby increasing the number of visitors and potential customers to your site.

How to Get the Search Engines to Index A Website

Search Engine Optimisation 17/08/2012

Getting the search engine to index all the pages of a website is very important if you want your visitors to discover your site. But before you do any measures to get your site indexed, it is important to check if all your web pages are already indexed. Thre are two methods to do this:

  1. Type in “site:example.com” on google, yahoo or bing’s search bar replacing example.com with your own domain name. Check if all your pages shows up on the search results.
  2. Type in “site:example.com/page1.html” on google, yahoo or bing’s search bar replacing example.com with your specific web page you wanted to check. See if the page shows up on the search result.

If all your pages show up on the search results, then there’s nothing else to do. However, in some cases, not all web pages are indexed. The following checklist can be used to ensure that all web pages get indexed.

Are Search Engines blocked?
Check whether the meta robots of the page in question have blocked the search engine. Try to change the meta robot tags of those web pages from noindex to index. By doing this, you allow the search engines to visit those pages. Search again using method number 2 as mentioned above to see if it shows up.

Do bear in mind that a fairly new site or websites that had not been updated for quite sometime, may take hours or even days before new pages get indexed. Otherwise, you will need to wait for a few minutes before it shows up.

Static Pages
All being equal, static pages can be indexed in search engines more easily as opposed to dynamic pages. This is because the file is physically present as opposed to dynamically generated each time search engine robots/spiders crawl a page. However, bigger sites will be difficult to update/manage if static pages are used.

Do you have Static URL’s?
If the URL of your website contains query string (?, = or id) characters then it will be difficult for search engines to crawl your site. This is the inherent characteristic of a dynamic website. Enabling the mod rewrite mimic the characteristic of a static page by rewriting the url without the query string.

Build an HTML Sitemap
A site map is the collection of all the web pages of your website. Site maps are usually used for big websites where there is greater number of pages but you can also make the site map for the small websites as well. Site maps help you in indexing your website in search engines. The simplest method that can be used to build a site map is to create a page and then add links of all other pages in that page. Put a link of that page on the footer of your website. This is the simplest method that can be used for site map.

XML Sitemap
You can also use xml site map by using an xml sitemap tool. This software will collect the links of all the pages of your website and then list all these pages in a file. A software tool to create a site map for a large websites is beneficial as it is time saving. You can also put an xml site map link on your website. This is because search engines read xml site map more easily as compared to other formats although debatable.

Is your Site Built for Readers?
A website should be designed by keeping the visitor in mind. Meta tags of your website should be completely filled. Breadcrumbs can also be provided to make your website user friendly. The URL structure of your website should be SEO friendly. All important and related web pages should be interlinked with each other.

Conclusion
Although a visitor can go directly to your website and navigate through the different pages within your site, you must not disregard traffic referred to by search engines as this will attract new visitors to your site. An indexed page only indicates that it had been crawled by search engines. It is important that your website appears on the first or second page of search engine results as this tends to be the normal search habit of the general audience before they modify the keyword they are searching for.

By looking at the source code of a website, you can get a good idea of how much the webmaster has worked for creating a search engine friendly website. The longer the code, the more bloated it probably is, and if the code is small, then that’s the way it should be. A number of tools are out there in the market for creating pages visually. While some of these chop up the code after the website design is in place, others do not do such a good job. Even professionals are puzzled at the sight of having to fix the code bloat their web development programs create.

Breadcrumbs & Well Structured Menu Links
A majority of time a user spends on your website should not be wasted by having them finding out how to navigate through it properly. For a smooth navigation experience, you have to plan how the website menu is going to be optimized. Statistics on creating a search engine friendly website show that a new visitor who has a hard time navigating through the website is likely not to revisit it again. These are three main reasons these links are used to create a search engine friendly website.

  1. Smoother navigation
  2. Forming the right information hierarchy for the website
  3. Spreading the links throughout the website

Internal Linking within a Web Page Content
Internal links within a page directly takes a reader from one page to another. It allows the user to navigate within related topics without having the reader to search your website. This is particularly for sites that contain hundreds of pages.

Sitemap
The most underestimated trick in creating a search engine friendly website has to be sitemaps. If you have visited a theme park, you know what a sitemap is, it shows all the pathways, and the different facilities within the place. For websites, sitemaps are basically a single page, which shows the entire structure of your website, including the sections, and embedded links. The problem in sitemaps is that, they are usually not updated enough; otherwise, they would prove quite helpful to the visitors, one to create a search engine friendly website. Through sitemaps, you let the search engine know where to go.

Heading Structure (h1, h2 etc…)
The relevance of your heading tabs is perfectly understood by search engine spiders. A greater amount of weightage is given to text inside a heading tag, in the case that your heading tag is optimized around the pages. Larger font or the H1 heading gets a greater weightage than the H4 heading.

Great Content
They say “content is key”, and that’s quite true even in the world where all they want you to do is to optimize your website with Meta Tags and a number of cunning tools. If you want subscribers, and real people who make it a habit to come to your website due to the quality of content there, you had better come up with some original ideas and things to share. A great way of capturing the reader’s attention is to imagine if you are writing for your spouse, parents, siblings, or children to read.

Conclusion
To create a search engine friendly webpage, you need quality, quantity, and optimization. May be you need someone to take care of the technical side of things, while you concentrate on keeping the content fresh and intriguing.

LongTail keywords are the combination of words or the different phrases that are not commonly searched. It is made so that if a potential customer types a phrase it will be guided to your page automatically. It is a good technique to increase the traffic on your website.

There is another Google tool that helps out you to search for the long tail keywords that is the “wonder wheel”. This is available on the left column of the Google when you use the several search tools along with the different search tools. After the search for the keywords you have to optimize the website to accommodate the new long tail keywords. There are two different ways to customize the webpage:

  • Create the new content for the page

It is usually recommended that you create new content for your page rather than changing in the existing content on the page. This is very good technique as when you increase the number of pages in the website, the better there is a chance that it will pop in the results of the search engine. Another point to consider is that you wouldn’t have to change a webpage that has a good ranking rather than leaving it working well.

Regardless of whether you are creating new contents of the page or you are changing or writing a new page you have to follow the SEO rules. The main point is to make the good content and to make sure it is very useful and valuable to the potential customers.

Precautions with the long tail keyword
It should be avoided to write a long tail keyword that does not relate to the webpage. It is not a good technique as it will only result in the site being viewed by the customers that do not have a positive turn on the traffic on your website; it could also result in your website to be banned on the Google and the other search engine providers.

It should also be focused that the very specific and to the point phrases should be avoided as they are searched less on the search engine. The Google does not display results for the “to the point” keywords or key phrases. You might want to change their page for the specific city name. This may be helpful when finding the business in that specific area.

Conclusion
The use of long tail keyword is a good solution to increase the web traffic to your site as it increases the chances of your website to display on the higher search results on a search engine when a specific long tail keyword is typed.

How to Use Meta Tags in To Improve Your Website Traffic

Search Engine Optimisation 17/08/2012

Meta tags are part of of more than a hundred of different algorithms of every major search engines when deciding which websites are relevant. The first ten most relevant websites or web pages are shown on the first page of the results when users search for a particular keyword or phrase. Websites that cater to a particular niche are increasing by the second. Although not the end all or be all, it is important that the use of meta tags is optimized if you want to get a bigger slice of online visitors.

Below are the most important meta tags used by top websites in search engine optimization:
The Meta Title
Technically, the title tag is not considered a Meta Tag, even though it appears in the head block of a page you visit. A title tag can be thought of as an optional page descriptor, and if you follow the W3C instructions, its use is compulsory.

<title>Enter your Page Title here</>

Meta Description Tag
A META Description tag is used to serve as an introduction to your website. In the absence of such a tag, the first few lines of your front page are likely to serve as the sole description of the website.

<meta name=”description” content=”Enter your description here.” />

What makes this tag so important is that, it includes a short description of your webpage. Whenever a person looks up a keyword phrase, it is the META description tag that comes up in the search result – either as a whole or in part. The person should be able to have a glance at the description and be able to tell what your page is really about, in addition to becoming curious. The jist of the Description Meta Tags in search engine promotion lies in the initial 150 characters, as these are the ones that will be displayed in search results. Search engine such as Google only shows your keyword, and the text around it, not the Meta tag description.

The Meta Keywords Tag
The keyword Meta tag is a fading memory for the meta tags in search engine promotion buffs, as these days, its use is unheard of. The keyword meta tag is only used by Microsoft Bing, for the soul purpose of detecting spam. If the word spam does not mix with your site, it is best to avoid its use entirely. Some people just cannot seem to breathe without these tags, and the only advice to them is not to stuff as many as 200 keywords in a hope to elevate their website popularity.

<meta name=”keywords” content=”Enter your keywords here.” />

Meta Robots Tag
A well coded page can be crawled and indexed by search engine robots and spiders automatcially. However, there maybe situations that you don’t want to get a specific page crawled and indexed to avoid duplicate contents and potential search engine penalty. The use of Meta Robots Tag is useful in these situations using the “noindex” tag below:

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,follow” />

Other Meta Tags

There are literally tons of Meta tags in search engine promotion some of which are no longer use today. They are used to perform the following functions:

The Charset Tag
In the case that you are delivering HTML through the use of English language characters, you would want to use the Charset, which known as UTF-8 tag in the United States.

Prompt Spider to Revisit

<meta name=”revisit-after” content=”30 days” />

To describe the distribution

<meta name=”distribution” content=”web” />

To refresh the page

<meta http-equiv=”refresh” content=”30″ />

Alternating between telling the page to either redirect or to refresh

<meta http-equiv=”refresh” content=”x_seconds; url=http://www.example.com/pagetosendto.html” />

Different Reasons Why Some of these Tags are Obsolete:

  1. Due to numerous Server side methods
  2. Schema Tagging
  3. Search engines such as Google do not advocate their use

If there were two things that have made these obsolete, these would probably be the Rich Data Snippets and Schema tagging.

Conclusion

It is helpful to know what meta tags are and how to use Meta Tags in search engine promotion. It is not something that will bring about the magical change you always wanted, but it proves to be an asset in improving your search result ranking. The higher your site/page is in search results the greater the chance more online users get to see it thereby increasing the number of visitors to your site.

How To Optimize An Image To Attract More Visitors

Search Engine Optimisation 17/08/2012

Images that are well optimized for web will appear high on internet search results. These are evident on photo sharing websites such as the Flickr or the Base and on other social image sharing websites. Images are one of the most increasingly searched data on the search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing etc. This increasing amount of image searches emphasizes the need to exert equal effort on the optimization of images when developing a website.

Below are given some tips that may help in keeping the optimization of images an easy job for you:

Use the Right Format File
It is always good that you save the images in their right format. The .jpeg format should be used for photos, .gif for animations and .png for logos, buttons and other used in the website.

Image File Name
The naming of the image is an important step since the pictures have to be correctly named to what they represent and the message you want to convey from it. Although debatable, the use of hyphen (-) is recommended instead of the use of underscores (_) in the name of your images file. The process of naming a file is important before you upload it to your site. The name should describe the image and should be cleverly described so that the image is found easily by search engines. The file name should contain similar words or keywords as the phrase that someone will use to searched for it.

Image Alt Tags
The search engine is an algorithm and is not able to recognize what is going on in the picture. The instant recognition is not possible since the spiders cannot understand the image as it crawls. The need of alt text is there to make the search engine understand the picture. The alt text is the text that the search engine spiders use to understand the pictures or images on the net. The code of adding the alt text is following:

<img src=”your-image-name.jpg” width=”″ height=”″ Alt=”State what the image is”>

File Size
The size of file is very important so that the images don’t take forever to load and the size of the image file should be kept as small as possible. When the image is placed on a web page, the height and width tags must be entered. The large image should not be deliberately made look smaller by altering the height and width tags. It is always recommended to use an image editing software to change the file size of an image before it is uploaded on the net.

Total Number of Images Per Web Page
The number of images per single page should have a limit; excess numbers of images should not be used in a single web page. The thumb rule that should be followed in most cases is that the size of image should not be greater than 30k per page. The cropping of image should also be done so that there can be more space for the content to be added.

Last But Not the Least: The Quality of Images
Since an image in general speaks a thousand words, the quality of an image should be of high quality. The resolution of the image should be set so that it does not appear pixilated whenever it is viewed. The contrasts are very much important since the contrasts generally add to the quality of images. When an image is created and saved, it is imprtant to save them by the “Save for the Web” option as it will optimize it for standard web size and quality.

Conclusion
Above all else, there’s a lot of effort spent in ensuring that the website design looks good. If one of you’re objectives is to get your website, web pages, images and graphics seen by a lot of online visitors and internet searchers; image optimization is of paramount importance. There are an increasing number of people searching for specific images. In order to attract visitors to your website from this group of searchers, it is important that efforts should be made to put into practice all the tips highlighted above.
